Fixing Broken Lid Knob Screws
Revere Ware lid knobs can often develop rust between the knob and the stainless steel lid, making the lid knob very hard to twist off. On accation (it has happened to us several times), when trying to unscrew the knob, the screw stud on the lid can snap off. (To avoid this try squirting some WD-40 in the crack and letting it sit, or heating the underside of the lid on a low gas flame to loosen up the bond.)
To repair the lid, you need to find a replacement screw, cut it to the proper length, and then drill a hole in the center of the lid.
Step 1: Get a screw
The revere ware lid knobs use a standard 8-32 machine screw thread. Find either a stainless or brass screw (so it won’t corrode) at your local hardware store that is at least 0.25 inches long. If the screw you purchase is longer than .35 inches, you will have to cut it down or it will bottom out in the knob’s screw channel and you won’t be able to tighten the screw.
We prefer Phillips heads versus slotted heads in screws because they stick to the screw driver better making them easier to start. In this example we are using a slotted head screw because that is what we happened to have.
Step 2: Cut your screw
Cut your screw to between 0.25 and 0.35 inches using a hack saw.
Cutting a screw with a hack saw often leaves the threads at the end burred. De burr your screw end using a file or a sanding belt.
Step 3: Drill a hole in the lid
You can either use a 5/32 or 3/16 drill bit. Using a 5/32 bit will allow the screw to screw in to the lid, making it at little easier to attach the knob.
Drill the hole as close to the center of the lid as you can.
Step 4: Attach the knob
Lastly, attach the knob using the screw and you are done.
