Can the copper layer on the bottom of Revere Ware cookware be repaired?

A customer wrote us with the following question:

Can my 62 year old Revere Ware “pasta-pot” be copper re-coated ?  I had boiled water dry.

The short answer is no, not that we know of.  We have never heard of a service (or a process) that does this.  There is something somewhat similar for copper cookware, called re-tinning, but that is a very different process and doesn’t apply here.

We have done tests specifically where we heated a dry pan to see what would happen.  And indeed, some of the copper came off.  However, the older, well-made cookware (and 62 years old fits squarely in that category) has a pretty thick copper layer:

In our experiment, the amount of copper that came off was minimal given the overall thickness of the layer.

Having said that, if you are seeing stainless steel through the copper layer, I would thank your pan for many years of good service, and find yourself a vintage replacement.  You can find a robust market for used Revere Ware cookware on eBay, and using our helper site, can likely find a replacement for just about anything.

Dangerous fix for vintage Revere Ware pressure cookers on Ebay

I came across this purported fix (pdf in case the listing is gone) for faulty vintage Revere Ware pressure cooker over pressure plugs on Ebay.

The problem with over pressure plugs on the vintage cookers is (a) they contain solder inside that will melt (thus opening up the over pressure hole) when the pressure gets too high, and once blown, they are useless, and (b) they are no longer available.

While they do include a copy of the pressure cooker manual (which you can download from our site for free), the fix itself is nothing more than a screw and nut that will permanently block off the over pressure hole.

While it may be frustrating not being able to use your pressure cooker without an over pressure plug, plugging the hole and leaving yourself with no over pressure release is dangerous.  The instructions that came with the “fix” give no warning as to the dangers of not having a pressure relief when using a pressure cooker.

We can’t recommend fixing your pressure cooker in this way.

More finding Revere Ware on Ebay

Ebay now appears to do some classification of its own, although it is far from complete.  This page separates out some Revere Ware listings into categories.  The amount of categories is far from complete and this only appears to cover a small number of the available Revere Ware related auctions.

More and more Revere Ware on Ebay

It is hard to say whether the amount of Revere Ware on Ebay keeps growing because there are more people interested in Revere Ware or more people are using Ebay overall.  Our tracking continues to show the amount of Revere Ware related listings on Ebay increasing steadily.

Looking at Ebay’s revenue growth does offer some clues:

In the last 3 1/2 years, Ebay’s revenue has increased about 50%.  Clearly people are using Ebay more and more and a rising tide usually affects all boats.  But Revere Ware listings have increased by about 200%, clearly outpacing the growth of Ebay sales.  It seems likely that an overall trend of increasing participation in Ebay is helping the Revere Ware listing growth, but it also appears that people are listing more Revere Ware overall.

New old Revere Ware

If you’ve read some of the information on our site and blog, you are surely aware that the quality of Revere Ware cookware made after 1968 is poor compared to the high quality cookware the company made between 1939 and 1968 (the vintage era).  Stuff made in the last 20 years seems to be even cheaper; I’ve personally heard many stories about newer cookware falling apart.

So it is easy to get excited about finding some truly mint condition Revere Ware cookware like this brand new vintage Revere drip coffee pot on Ebay.  The seller was nice enough to send us copies of the manual for this pot for our archives.

If you are a true Revere Ware fan, keep your eyes on the Ebay auctions as new/unused vintage Revere Ware cookware does appear from time to time.  If you are simply looking to replace an old vintage piece, there are plenty available on Ebay and the number of Ebay listings is growing every year.

The best place to find Revere Ware cookware on Ebay is our site revereware.org, which categorizes all Revere Ware listings on Ebay by type and size, so it is easier to find just what you are looking for.

Update: this piece ended up selling for just over $200.

Finding replacement lids

Revere Ware (aka World Kitchen) sells very few lids anymore for their copper bottom style cookware.  Our latest check shows two lids, a 10″ and one listed as fitting 2 and 3 quart saucepans.  For owners of vintage cookware, specifying lids by capacity means little as the sizes varied over the years for a given capacity.

By far the best places to get replacement lids for your copper bottom cookware are your local thrift store, where you can often find a large selection of lids, or Ebay, if you want to find a very specific size.  As of this writing, Ebay lists about 100 lids at auction.

We’ve created a site, revereware.org that sorts all Revere Ware listings on Ebay sorted by type and size, and you can find all the lids here.

To find the right lid for your cookware, choose a size that is listed with measurements the same size or slightly smaller than the inside diameter of your cookware. Revere Ware lids are usually just slightly smaller than the cookware they fit. Ebay listers will show this as anywhere from 1/16″ to 1/4 inch smaller than your cookware diameter.

Very few Revere Ware pots in our experience have a diameter that is NOT a whole inch; exceptions we have found include a 6 1/4″ skillet (that takes a 6″ lid) and 5 1/2″ saucepans. However, based on auction listing we’ve seen, there do appear to be 6.5″ and 7.5″ sizes as well.

For example, lids listed measuring 5.25 (5 1/4), 5.3125 (5 5/16), 5.375 (5 3/8), 5.4375 (5 7/16), and 5.5 (5 1/2) inches are all probably the same size measured slightly differently by different sellers and should all fit a sauce pot with a 5.5″ inside diameter.

Is Revere Ware collectible?

I occasionally see some colored Revere Ware handles and knobs on Ebay and they typically sell for slightly above what you might pay for our black replacement Bakelite parts.  But this recent auction for yellow handles and knobs really has me scratching my head.

Selling for a whopping $362, I can’t imagine why these parts were considered so valuable by several different bidders.  Certainly colored parts are rare, but is it really worth almost $400 to have colored Bakelite handles on some of your Revere Ware cookware?

There is another set listed as well.

Ebay gets more sophisticated, makes Revere Ware easier to find

It is hard to be a Revere Ware fan and miss Ebay as probably the best place to get good quality vintage Revere Ware cookware these days to fill-out one’s collection or replaced a lost or damaged piece.  Some time ago we created a site to categorize all the listings for Revere Ware on Ebay (www.revereware.org).  The number of revere ware listings on Ebay continues to grow, as evidenced by our tracking of the number of pieces available over the last two years.

(We had a small bug that kept us from recording numbers above 1,000, which is why the top of the graph is flat.)

Ebay seems to have made some recent changes that make it easier to find Revere Ware (and probably many other) items. First, when searching on “revere ware” Ebay now includes results from “revereware” (i.e. no space) as well.  This is helpful as items are often listed in as one or the other but not both.  Second, Ebay searches for keywords like “revere ware” now show up in Google results.

Revere Ware & the recession

In my experience, thrift stores have always been a good source for used Revere Ware cookware and I have gotten most of my extensive collection from thrift stores.  As a general rule, at a miminum you could count on there being a good selection of Revere Ware lids, should you need a replacement.

But the last year or so I’ve noticed a curious thing; less and less Revere Ware at thrift stores.  I don’t think it is too much of a stretch to assume that more people are bargain hunting and depleting the stock of available cookware at thrift stores.

But, on the other hand, the stock of Revere Ware on Ebay keeps growing and growing.

I am guessing the same recession mentality that is driving people to buy cookware on the cheap may be leading people to try and sell whatever they can to make money, including their old Revere Ware.

The trend clearly means that Ebay is the place now to get add to your Revere Ware collection or to replace a ruined pan, and with our new parts, you can keep them looking and working well for a long time to come.

As we mentioned in a previous post, we recently created a tool to help you find the specific Revere Ware piece you are looking for on Ebay: www.revereware.org. This tool downloads all the Revere Ware Ebay listings every 30 minutes and categorizes them by type and size to make it easier for you to find that 9 inch lid or 3 quart sauce pan.
